I know this has nothing to do with sports, but other than sports, animals mean a lot to me.

It is a constant struggle for "No kill" shelters to get support from the general public. In the tough economic times that we are in people see pets as a luxury they don't need. They simply dispose of their pets. It's a sad fact. Unfortunaely many of these shelters are packed to capacity, and many pets hve to be euthanized.

In my little attempt to help I just click on a link to this webiste. It doesn't cost anything, it just gives the websites hits, so that their sponsors will continue to fund them. I would ask the Big hearted CBS community to help, just by clicking on the site whenever you get a chance.

http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3

I was wondering why so many are disinterested in hockey. I just want to know why sports people don't watch hockey?

Is it becasue it has no major network coverage, including ESPN? Is it becuase you don't understand the rules of the game? Are you against fighting? Do you think it's just not a made for television sport?

Just doing a little research. Why don't you like hockey?

On a normal week between my two personal vehicle I purchase about 35 gallons of gasoline every week. I would love to purchase less, but have quite a commute from my rural home. So at $3. 65 (average in Atl. as of 10/9/08) I will spend $125.75 a week on gas for both vehicles. Just over $500 a month for gas. Crazy! Why couldn't the government regulate the price of gas for a given amount of time, and subsidize that, instead of CEO's in the banking industry? We have seen how well that worked, AIG!

Anyway, if the price of gas could be subsidized to even take the price down to say $1.35 a gallon, then how much could we all save? I personally would save about $78 a week, or $312 a month. I am probably above average in my gas usage as compared to most people, but a saving of $312 a month would do me a world of good. I think this would also help many others too.

The National Hockey League opens play tomorrow with the Tampa Bay Lightning against the New York Rangers from Prague, Czech Republic. Yet you wouldn't hardly know it according to most sports sites. There had been little talk of the NHL on any sports stations. There is still no big TV contract for the sport and it's a shame.

In an earlier blog I complained about non sports post on a Sportsline site. I just want to see if anyone on this site can answer this question?

Why is illegal for anyone to price gouge after a hurricane, yet with hurricane Ike looming just off the Texas coast, the price of gasoline has already increased dramatically. I understand that 30% of the production in the gulf was cut off for a matter of days, but if I were to charge someone an increased amount for a service after a hurricane, I could be reprimanded legally?

Doe this just provide an excuse for the oil companies to raise prices for a while? Will the three days or so of lost production critically impact their earnings?

I'm sure there are a lot of people who feel the same way. But do I need to know what you are. What your views are?

So the big new is that Vice Presedential candidate Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant. Do I really care. The only way this should show up on Sportline is if it was an unknown member of the Dallas Cowboys who did the deed! The only time we should hear the word Conservative on this site is when you are talking about the play calling of Tennessee's Phillip Fullmer because he has a quarterback who can't complete a pass to anyone wearing an orange jersey. The only time we should hear the word Liberal on this site is when you are describing the liberal amount of passing yards that the Cincinnati Bengals defense is going to give up this year. The only time Barack Obama's name should be mentioned on this site is when Harvard has just handed Columbia a butt whuppin' in football. The only time we should hear John McCain on this site is when he was the asked to do the coin toss at the Army-Navy game, and was then seen in the skybox sipping 18 year old scotch and rooting on Army.

I wish the kids of today could have grown up when I did. There were no computers or video games to sit in front of all day. As kids we looked forward to weekends when we would grab our bats and gloves and meet all our friends at the ball field, which we walked about two miles to get to. We didn't have to worry about getting rides from our parents. We usually didn't have enough people to play a game, so games had to be made up. We would play games like Home Run Derby, 500, or if we had enough players, a real game. We did this all day. We didn't have to be home till the street lights came on, so why not play all day. We would emulate our favorite players of the era. Squatting at the plate like Pete Rose. Pitching with the reverse pivot off the mound like Luis Tiant. It was fun. Then when all the play was done, maybe we could get the Cincinnati Reds on one of the four local television stations. That is if we weren't too tired to actually get up and change the station. If it wasn't on tv, then the radio would come on, and I would listen till I fell asleep, rarely making it to the end of the game. Fortunately, there was a newspaper in the driveway the next morning. On the front page the Reds score would be posted at the top right of the page. I knew that if I saw that smiling face basball icon at the top of the paper, the news was good. The Reds had won! After eating a bowl of some sort of super sugar coated cereal, it was off to Scott's house down the street to see what time we were going to play that day.

I got an e-mail last night from my Uncle in Ohio talking about Jay Bruce, and how impressive he was in his first two games. I began thinking to myself, "I wonder if my wife and I could go up for a Reds game this summer?" I haven't been in Ohio since 2003, and that was for my 20 year high school reunion. I did catch a game at GABP while I was there though. A loss to the Marlins no less, uggh! So again, thinking, is it worth the money to take a long weekend to CTown to see my last place Reds. Hmmm! Lets do the math

It is 407 miles from my home in North Georgia to Cincinnati. The car gets 22mpg highway, on about a 15 gallon tank. OK! Thats 814, just to get to the park in back, but have to stay in Dayton with family to save on hotel. Wait? Is it cheaper to stay in Newport than the extra 220 miles for two trips to ballparkl from Dayton? OK, have to do some more math?

No, not that! I know how much fun that is!

The phone rings on a Sunday morning. The caller ID says its' the wifes boss. We wonder why she would be calling on a Sunday? Well apparently my wife had told the boss lady that I used to play ball. She was calling to fill a spot on a co-ed softball team. I had not played ball since 2003 when I severely broke both bones in my wrist. I have had two surgeries on my left shoulder which is my throwing shoulder. These from being a pitcher from the time I was eight, up till I was 36. I have had surgery on my left knee to repair ligaments, from what, you guessed it! Playing baseball. I have always loved baseball, but it has not been good to me. Thank goodness for insurance!

My wife told me to go. She knew how much I missed playing ball, and how much I loved to play. Even though this was co-ed softball, it was fun. It had been about 8 years since I played softball, and 5 years since playing on any kind of team. I was a little worried about how the knee and shoulder and wrist would hold up. I can tell you that I am a little sore in the legs today, but that was a lot of fun.

I have been glued to the television for the first two real days of the baseball season. I have had the remote on full alert since. I don't know if it is more than usual, but I have seen bats breaking left and right. Major League baseball introduced the rule that coaches had to wear batting helmets for the first time this year. This was instituted because of a freak injury to a minor league coach who took a line drive in the head, and paid the ultimate price. I like the rule. But what of the dangers of the broken bat. I don't recall anyone ever being severely injured by a broken bat. I do remember Steve Yeager taking a splinter of a bat in the throat, thus the invention of the throat guard that dangled from the bottom of the catchers mask. I do remember Roger Clemens chucking the barrel of a broken bat. It just amazes me that with all the marvels of modern technology, that the best we can do is make a bat from an ash tree. I know that an aluminum bat is not the answer because that would get someone killed for sure. I know I have taken one in the leg from an aluminum bat 55 feet away and it left lace marks on my leg for three days, in amazingly deep purples! I know that hockey has gone to composites and they seem to like them. I just wonder if they can create a bat out of plastics or composites that will not produce the same effects as an aluminum bat, and react more like wood? I know this seems trivial, but I just wonder why it hasn't been addressed. If there are any chemistry majors out there who could create such a bat, I'm sure you payroll would rank right up there with A-Rod!

Spring, the flowers start to bloom, the birds start to sing, and the dust can finally be cleaned off my golf clubs! I started playing golf in 1990, and lived in Florida. Golf was a year round sport. This past year I moved to the mountains of North Georgia and had to endure, what I call winter. I'm sure many of you from even further north would laugh at what I call winter, but it is still winter to me. I have never had to endure the browned out fairways, The abundance of leaves found just off the fairway (where I can usually start to look for my shots). I haven't known what it was like to have to hit foam golf balls in my unfinished basement. I love to play golf. I love to be outdoors, I had forgotten what winter was all about. I don't claim to be a great golf (11 handicap) but I am like a addict on methodone right now, I want the real thing, but know I can't have it! Oh, the sun will come out some days and tempt us with beautiful blue skys, until you open the door and the cold wind smacks you right in the face. Some people still play when it is like that, but not me. I could never understand how a guy can swing a golf club with four layers of clothing on, and gripe the whole round about how cold it is, and that he is playing terrible? I love the mountains of north Georgia. I have played some of the most scenic and beautiful courses imaginable. My home course is tucked in the mountains, with an abundance of wildlife as it has been deemed a nature preserve. It can even sometimes be distracting as to it's beauty, until Mother Nature takes it over in the winter. Oh how I need spring. I wonder how many people are like me? Sitting in their living rooms and occasionally clicking on this weeks PGA event, to catch the players in their short sleeves at Pebble Beach, Scottsdale or Doral. Not to see who was winning, but just to see what is to come in the next month or so. Hiking down the fairway on the greenest grass you have ever seen only to go find my ball off in the woods again. I have come to accept that I have an addiction. Come on Spring! I need my fix!!!!

Quote "And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come." Field of Dreams"
